What this class is not:
Firstly lets take the biggest fear out of attending this class. We do not need to have our belly out. In fact most of the women keep them under wraps in the class..
Secondly this class is not about having to be a skinny, sexy and seductive young woman, although if that describes you (Lucky thing) you are more than welcome too. Our Belly dance class is about celebrating women of all abilities, ages, shapes and sizes. It is about feeling liberated to dance and feel comfortable in your own skin.
The main aims of this class is to have fun while learning simple troupe belly dance choreography. We focus on confidence and developing self esteem as these things are often low for many women. The class environment is very supportive with women at a variety of abilities and levels. The ladies really support and encourage each other as we all remember how it feels in the early days.
Belly Dance is probably the oldest form of dance having roots in all ancient cultures from the orient to India to the mid-East. Probably the greatest misconception about belly dancing is that it is intended to entertain men. Throughout history, this ritualized expression has usually been performed for other women, generally during fertility rites or parties preparing a young woman for marriage. In most cases, the presence of men is not permitted. This is a dance performed by women for women.
Belly dancing is natural to a woman's bone and muscle structure with movements emanating from the torso rather than in the legs and feet. The dance often focuses upon isolating different parts of the body, moving them independently in sensuous patterns, weaving together the entire feminine form. Belly dancing is generally performed barefoot, thought by many to emphasize the intimate physical connection between the dancer, her expression, and Mother Earth.
Belly Dance is not only fun, but it’s also a great form of exercise. Belly dancing tones the arms, hips, bottom and strengthens and tightens the back, abs and obliques. It also greatly and improves flexibility through mobilizing the back and pelvis. As a form of exercise, it can burn as many calories as jogging, swimming or riding a bike. Belly dance is low impact and is much more entertaining the gym. Most importantly, belly dance was specifically developed for the female body and is an art that has been perfected for thousands of years.
You will learn to use your body in ways that you did not think was possible before whilst toning and helping to re-shape your female figure. Once you have mastered the moves that accentuate your natural curves you can’t help feel good about yourself. Dancing with a group of like minded women who learn to accept and celebrate their curves is really great for boosting your confidence. Our classes are very supportive and students encourage each other. We often work in pairs or small groups when mastering a new move.
De-stress and Relax
Belly dance is a great escape form the real world. Focusing on your muscles, the movements and the music leaves no room from day to day chores and life’s stresses. Just switch of and tune in with your body.
Who are The Belly Dance Divas?
We are a group of women who love to Belly Dance. We often go out and perform in the community - were not perfect but we have a lot of fun. This was really scary for some of the women the first time they did it now most of them can't get enough it's totally addictive. If performing isn't your thing don't worry as this is not a compulsory part of attending the classes and being part of the Diva's group. It's totally up to you! In addition to performing we fund raise at events for charities and our performance costumes. Check out our last charity performance.
